Geography and Demography of Bobbili

Bobbili is located at 18.5667°N 83.3667°E and has an average elevation of 103 meters. As per 2011 census, Bobbili had a total population of 56, 819 out of which 28, 285 were males and 28, 534 were females. The average literacy rate was recorded to be 76.66% with 39,193 literates, higher than the national average of 74%.

History of Bobbili

The kingdom of Bobbili is known for its rich heritage and glorious past. The kingdom was founded way back in the 17th century by Pedda Rayuru. He was the 15th descendant of the Rajah of Venkatagiri. The town was originally names Peddapulli, which translates to ‘the big tiger’. It is said that the town was named Peddupalli after Sheh Muhhamad Khan, the Nawab of Srikakulam who gave the town as a gift to the maharaja of Venkatagiri for his impeccable services. As time passed the name got modified to ‘Pebbuli’, then ‘Bebbuli’ and finally ‘Bobbili’.

Battle of Bobbili

The Battle of Bobbili was held in 1757 and is a significant part of the history of south India. The battle made Bobbili a well known name and is also known for the sacrifices that people made. Vizianagarm kings won the battle with the help of French General Marquis de Bussy. The chiefs of Bobbili and the Rajas of Vizianagram were constantly battling for power. It was in the year 1757 that General Bussy decided to restore order.  Raja Vijaya Rama Raju persuaded him that it was chief Ranga Rao’s fault and joined the French camp with 11,000 soldiers who were ably supported by Nizam's troops against his arch rival.

Industries in Bobbili

Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation has set up Industrial Development area at Bobbili in 2008. Under this scheme, nearly 200 industrial and manufacturing units would be made on an area of about 1, 000 acres of land. An estimated amount of Rs. 20 crore has been spent by the state government on infrastructure, roads, lighting, water supply and power transmission. The main projects in the pipeline for this industrial development area are – B. K Steels, Vizag Profiles and Ferro Alloys.
